I Hear Music From Outer Space
Hello friends, sorry to miss posting yesterday - it was our first full day staying in one place, and we were just too busy taking in Santa Fe. We arrived from Texas in the late afternoon, and headed into town for a stroll around the old city...after which I collapsed into bed fully clothed and slept for ten hours. Apparently long days of early rising and hard travel finally got to me.
The next morning I awoke a new woman. After losing an early morning cribbage game with Jack, I rallied the troops and took everyone to Meow Wolf. Which proceeded to summarily blow all four of our tiny little minds!!!
For those of you who don't know about Meow Wolf, it's a New Mexico based artist's collective, and they've built their first permanent installation in an abandoned bowling alley in Santa Fe. "The House of Eternal Return" allows guests to try and unravel the tragic tale of the Selig family. The exhibit is 20,000 square feet of otherworldly mystery, complete with a musical mastodon, a journey into the family fish tank, a cave full of eyeballs, a tiny man in the toilet, and portals to other dimensions hidden in every household object. What happened to the Seligs? I won't tell you, but J&Z will. In excruciating detail, with references. I think that they might have taken this mystery more seriously than any previous visitors. And rightly so, as it revolves around a pair of eleven year old boy-girl twins. Coincidence? Probably not.
After about three hours at Meow Wolf, we remembered that we are earth-bound humans who need to eat, so we took a break for enchiladas, and to give me some practice with urban RV parking. While we were out, Zoe and I may or may not have found a vintage cowboy boot store, and we may or may not have acquired boots so spectacular that we now have to build new lifestyles around them.
While we were walking around, we got to talking about the Seligs, and were feeling bothered that we hadn't really solved the mystery. So back to Meow Wolf we went. This time we were no mere tourists - we were hard-boiled detectives, hellbent on uncovering the secret of what happened at The House. Except when we were playing the mastodon xylophone,
And cruising in an interdimensional RV,
And tumbling in the dryer.
They eventually made us leave, but not before we'd answered many questions, and cracked the codes that would allow us to answer many more. We spent the evening around the campfire reading the Seligs' dossiers and journals, and pondering what really happened to their pet hamster, Niimesku.
This morning took us to the Native American market in the plaza, where I may or may not have acquired more than one woman's share of turquoise. And Jack definitely did not get a miniature bow and arrow. Shopping was followed by street burritos before hitting the road to Phoneix, where we're spending the night at my college roommate Andrea's house, then heading down to Mexico in the morning!
